The SoCCC Journal Club is a recurring educational program that reviews and discusses important new research relevant to critical care cardiology. Each session highlights a recent publication and brings expert faculty together to interpret the findings, discuss clinical implications, and consider how the evidence may influence practice. HI-PEITHO: Reperfusion Therapy for Intermediate-High-Risk Pulmonary Embolism - What Have We Learned and What Comes Next?
This journal club featured a discussion of the landmark HI-PEITHO trial, which evaluated ultrasound-facilitated catheter-directed thrombolysis plus anticoagulation versus anticoagulation alone in patients with intermediate-high-risk pulmonary embolism (PE). Dr. Israel Safiriyu provided a perspective on trial design, strengths and limitations, and the practical application of the findings for clinicians caring for patients with acute pulmonary embolism. The study's co-lead investigator and lead author, Dr. Kenneth Rosenfield, joined the discussion and answered questions on how the results have influenced future PE management strategies.
